Search Engine Ranking Guide
Search engine ranking is far from being a science. You just need to know a few important steps to take in order to make your websites rank well. This information will help you rank well on all search engines, including Google, Bing, Yahoo and any other search engines you may wish to rank on.
First of all you need to have a title tag on every page you build. Every single page you make should include a title tag. The title of your page will appear in the blue band of your web browser, it may also appear in your search engine listings. Here is what the title tag looks like. <title>Search Engine Ranking Guide</title>. Just replace the Search Engine Ranking Guide part with your own title. This tag needs to go between your <head></head> tags which are at the top of your html code.
You should also include your same title you used in your title tag at the top of each page you create. It doesn't have to be exactly the same title, but it needs to have your important keywords you are focusing on, in the right order. If you are trying to rank well for the keyword search engine ranking, don't use a title like Ranking well on search engines. Instead use Search engine ranking tips. Your 3 main keywords are in the right order as you can see.
Next you need to name your images with keywords. For example if you are trying to rank for the keywords search engine ranking, you should name some of your images search-engine-ranking.jpg or search-engine.gif or ranking.jpg. Don't overdo it though, but you should have your keywords in 5 or 6 images on each page. Next, you need to use alt tags, that is the text you will see if you pass your mouse over an image. Put your main keywords in the alt tags. Once again, don't over do it, but use this trick. It's ok to have your main keywords in 7 or 8 alt tags or more, more then 10 though and the search engine might not like it. It also depends on how your pages are set up, sometimes more then 10 is ok.
You need to have web pages that don't have any html errors in them, this may hurt your page's ranking. If you have open tags, or unfinished tags, you should repair them.
Include your main keywords throughout the body of each page, it is good to have your keywords mentioned several times on each page, in the text on the page. Don't overdo it either, writing your main keywords 9 or 10 times on each page may be enough. Do your best to make the keywords fit in with the rest of your text, the search engines will like this.
Once your site is all built, you should have included a Links page in your main menu, call it a Links page, or a Resources page. On this page you will put links to other sites that link back to your site.
Google is the main search engine that relies on Link Count to know how high to rank a certain page. The more links pointing to your web pages the better. To get links, you need to visit web pages in the same category as your sites, and then you email or call the webmaster and ask him to exchange links. You send the webmaster the text of your link, the url of your link, and the description for your link. Once the exchange is complete you move on, and do more link exchanges. There are several good link exchange sites out there like www.invisible-links.com or www.linkalizer.com. These sites can help you get more links to your sites.
Install the Google toolbar on your computer, this will allow you to see the pagerank of each site you want to exchange links with. The higher the PageRank the better. You should also consider do homepage link exchanges. Instead of your links ending up on a links page, you ask the webmaster to exchange links with you, however you ask that he put your link on his homepage somewhere, and you put his link on your homepage too. You can put some text before your homepage links. Use the word Partners, and include your links below that.
Another good way to boost the popularity of your site and to get better search engine rankings is to visit sites and ask the webmaster if you can advertise on their website. The key is to find low cost advertising spots that get your link on that person's site. These are direct links, so they will be even better then link exchanges. Their site is linking to your's however your site is not linking to theirs. This makes for stronger links, and Google loves these types of links.
What I like to do (this is personal) is I add links to all my other websites at the bottom of all the pages of each site I create. Some people say it is not a good idea, but I have never had any problems due to this. You can also just add all the links to your other sites on your Links page. Your main goal is to get direct links to your pages. So when you do link exchanges, it is good to have traffic sent to other pages other then your homepage, this will help boost the individual rankings of each page of your site. Search engines like relevancy, so the more relevant your site seems to be, the higher it will rank. Search engines also love popularity, so make your web pages as popular as you can.
